Emily D. as a slacker…
Emily’s birthday is soon approaching. In honor of the occasion, I have composed a poem comprised entirely from the first lines of some of Emily’s poems. This one imagines her as a slacker:
A long, long sleep, a famous sleep,
After a hundred years—
How dare the robbins sing?
I had no cause to be awake!
The nearest dream recedes, unrealized.
